A reflection from your Taurus pal

Studio Notes

Hello there,

It's been a minute! My full-time contract has been navigating major changes as I got sucked into moving at the same time. (Yes, I am officially back in the Midwest!)

Not updating this newsletter was an unintended sacrifice—thanks for still being here.

I'll keep this email brief and share a beloved quote by Audre Lorde that is re-inspiring me:

I have a duty to speak the truth as I see it and share not just my triumphs, not just the things that felt good, but the pain. The intense, often unmitigated pain. It is important to share how I know survival is survival and not just a walk through the rain.
— Audre Lorde in "The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action" from Sister Outsider

I came across the quote early in my journey of exploring Black feminism and seeking stories that confirmed that I could, in fact, live the life that I envisioned for myself; it wouldn’t be easy, but it could be filled with joy, love, and community—and no hiding. This quote is how sharing stories, writing essays, and engaging in conversation with others who care became a priority for me.

What does it bring up for you? Please feel free to respond as a way to check in.

As we reach the end of the Taurus season, I want to share my latest studio note and upcoming events for my folks in Chicago. I hope to see you in person if you're local!

Much appreciation,

Sula / K.

Support the Homies

Y'all, I know some incredible people creating amazing art, and I'd love for you to help support them. Check out their projects below and consider donating funds, purchasing art, and/or sharing within your networks!

  • Ireashia M. Bennett is raising funds for their film, Backcountry, Red Clay. The experimental documentary film explores their family’s history and Black cultural traditions in Edgefield County, South Carolina amidst consumer-driven development and threats to Black cultural institutions. Give support here!
  • Eva Azenaro Acero's There's No Real Story Here: Collected Works is available for purchase at Exploding Moon Press. Eva's also heading to grad school in the fall, visit their Patreon for a paid membership and support the start of their journey.
  • I also want to uplift mutual aid efforts for Tesh Silver and Nino, two amazing folks navigating extensive medical journeys and could use further community support. These two were part of my introduction to Chicago's Dyke March community in 2013, and I've long admired them since then. Click on their names for ways to support.
